Did you know that when you crack a whip, the tip is moving faster than the speed of sound. That's why it “cracks”, instead of making a “wooosh”sound.

Sometimes I make it a point to find joy in the seemingly pointless, miniscule things in my life. What a feeling! You know the kind; finding ten dollars in an old bag, unexpected compliments from really unexpected people, slipping into a pair of warm jeans fresh out of the dryer. I find joy in saying hi to that friend that I haven’t spoken to since second grade. I find joy in the pleasant smile on the round face of the custodial worker at school, the one who reminds me of a Furby. I find joy in turning up my music to that point where you are just about to blow your speakers, putting down the windows, and driving in the sunshine. Surprise! The once perceptibly demanding twelfth grade calculus class will be watching The Goonies …for three days straight. When that guy lets you in front of him in a never ending line of cars and gives you a friendly wave. The satisfaction of a clean room, the music of a gnarly, yet brilliant guitar player on a Portsmouth corner, or saying the same thing as someone at the exact same time. Joy. The exhilarating feeling of making the yellow light or having a genuine, hardy laugh. Joy. My list could go on forever. If we really think what could put us in a great mood and learn to recognize, embrace, and appreciate them, our lists could be never ending. If we thought about these “pointless” things that make us so happy without even realizing they do, the seemingly tragic day we had could be outweighed by all these little moments of joy welded together. The worst day ever could easily, if you let it, be the best one yet. What are your simplistic pleasures in life? Have you taken the time to recognize?

  1. I don't know if anybody out there rows crew, but the most simple pleasure at practice for me is when the sun is shining you can feel it on your shoulders and neck, and you get that one second where you can feel the warmth go all the way to the tips of your toes and fingers. Not to mention at the same time to get a cool breeze coming off of the cold water.

  2. I love that furby! :) My favorite and most simple pleasure happens once a year. It's the day I realize that spring/summer is in sight. The day that I slow down and take a step back to look at the trees and see that they are showing signs of life is the happiest day I can think of. Around this time of year, I walk home from the bus and look at the big tree in my yard. I watch it blossom more each day and turn green with leaves. I literally smile and feel stupid but amazingly happy at the same time. Simplicity <3
